On Wednesday, September 20th Shawn Keane was presented with the Provost’s Outstanding Staff Award by Provost Nowell Donovan. The award recognizes staff members who demonstrate exemplary service to the campus community and who excel above and beyond what is required of their positions. Shawn was nominated for the award by several members of the TCU community who specifically highlighted her mentorship of veterans and her dedication to faculty and students in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. As one nominator described, “She has been instrumental in creating events and a safe space for TCU’s veterans for the last several years. She has organized numerous events for veterans, including a luncheon on Veteran’s Day, tying yellow ribbons around the trees, and get students and other staff involved in making the campus a better environment for veterans.” Shawn has served as part of the Veteran Services Task Force since 2009 and has for years tirelessly advised veteran students as part of the Veteran Students Alliance, a veteran student-led organization on campus.
“According to a number of the veterans, she and her commitment to their needs has been the reason that they have stayed at TCU to complete their education.”
Shawn’s impact extends beyond the veteran community to students across campus. In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology as administrative assistant, Shawn represents the disciplines to the wider TCU campus community and to the public: “Shawn is the first person a student will meet and her genuine friendliness, compassion, warmth, and willingness to walk anyone through paperwork make a lasting impression on our students,” said another nominator. Thank you for all that you do and congratulations, Shawn!
