Marta Suarez recently went viral after their TCU Women’s Basketball win to earn their spot in the Sweet 16. Following the late-Sunday-night-overtime win, the graduate student looked into the camera and asked her 8 a.m. professor to cancel class.

The moment prompted USA Today to speak with Alex Lemon, English professor and director of the Master of Liberal Arts program. He was eager to express his pride in TCU student-athletes. He talked specifically about the work they put into his Genres class, which is both a creative writing class and an exploration of various genres of literature.

“I get to see how much time students have dedicated to these pieces,” Lemon said. “And then to see them go out and excel on this international platform, it fills me with pride.”

He added that he was pleased with the opportunity to spark awareness on how much student-athletes put into the academic part of their lives and “what people don’t see when they are winning in overtime.”
