Muriel Cormican, associate dean of undergraduate studies in AddRan and professor of German, and Curt Rode, senior instructor of English and director of the Digital Culture & Data Analytics Program, discussed the course A Human-Centered AI Future, which was created in response to growing student interest in understanding AI through the lenses of the humanities and social sciences.

Originally offered as a special topics course, the class will now be taught as a stand-alone course due to high student engagement. Taught collaboratively by faculty from multiple disciplines, the class emphasizes discussion, interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world problem solving.

“Together, all these perspectives are hugely valuable, and that’s what we’re trying to emphasize, this interdisciplinarity,” Cormican said, noting the value of bringing together viewpoints from students majoring in different disciplines across campus.

As Rode noted, the fast pace of AI development makes ongoing discussion essential, particularly as new technologies raise urgent ethical concerns.

The course is part of a newly approved four-course certificate in artificial intelligence, expected to launch as early as this fall, highlighting AddRan faculty leadership in shaping human-centered conversations around AI.
