TCU’s nationally ranked Master of Science in Criminology & Criminal Justice program is redefining what it means to be a connected online student.
The distance learning program is designed for working professionals, prospective doctoral students and college graduates interested in the advanced study of criminal justice and criminology.
Kendra Bowen, graduate director and associate professor, and Michele Meitl, assistant director and associate professor, said that while many online programs leave students feeling isolated, TCU ensures its students build strong connections with faculty, peers and the university community. Students appreciate the cohort nature of the program because it allows them to form a community. Bowen and Meitl said the faculty have seen camaraderie among students.
“One of the things we stress to prospective students is that we want the students to feel the same connectedness to TCU as our on-campus students,” Bowen said. “That is why we have an on-campus orientation, social events throughout the program and Zoom meetings in classes.”
Faculty play a pivotal role in maintaining the program’s high standards. As full-time scholars with doctorates, they bring both expertise and real-world experience into their teaching. They are committed to keeping coursework dynamic and relevant, incorporating current trends and developments in criminal justice.
“Faculty availability through various means allows students to interact in ways that work for them,” Meitl said. “Faculty are passionate about the topics they teach and stay abreast of developments in online teaching and scholarship.”
Bowen said that student success when they leave the program is also an important priority for the program. Alumni frequently credit the program for helping them advance in their careers, with many securing promotions or new job opportunities as a direct result of their education.
“We have had many students go on to get promotions with their jobs or find a new opportunity because of their success in the program,” Bowen said. “We are there for those students to celebrate with them even after they graduate from the program.”
The program’s consistent national recognition reflects TCU’s core values of integrity, engagement, community and excellence. The program continually evolves to incorporate the latest teaching methods and industry developments, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the challenges of the criminal justice field. More than just a degree, the program offers a transformative experience that connects students to a lifelong professional network and the TCU community.
