Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
About the Program
The Department of Political Science Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) offers an opportunity for students to participate in an intellectual community committed to inquiry, investigation, and creativity. The integrative summer research program engages teacher-scholars with student-scholars.
The SURE Lab is a summer research program designed to provide undergraduate students with hands-on experience in collaborative political science research. Unlike traditional independent research programs, SURE Lab operates as a research lab where 4-6 students work collectively on a faculty-mentored project, fostering teamwork, skill-building, and professional development.
Key Features
- Collaborative Research: Students engage in a structured, team-based research project under the mentorship of two faculty members.
- Apprenticeship Model: Participants receive guidance and training in research methods, critical thinking, and professional communication.
- Stipend Support: Students receive financial support while gaining valuable research experience.
- Professional Development: The program includes skill-building workshops, opportunities to present research, and potential for publication.
- Faculty-Student Engagement: The lab structure strengthens faculty collaboration and mentorship, creating a sustainable, long-term research community.
Through SURE Lab, students not only deepen their understanding of political science research but also develop skills that enhance their academic and professional futures. Participants are selected through a competitive process involving an application and review by a department faculty committee. Students selected receive a $1500 stipend for the summer, paid in three installments based on project progress and completion.
