Degree Requirements

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English 

To earn a BA with a major in English, students must complete 33 hours in English or writing (exclusive of ENGL 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, at least 24 hours must be in upper-division ENGL or WRIT courses (30000 level and above). No more than nine hours of lower-division credit may be applied to the major.

Degree Requirements

  • Six (6) upper division hours from the American Literature subcategory
  • Six (6) upper division hours from the British Literature subcategory
  • Three (3) upper division hours from the Global and Diasporic Literature subcategoy 
  • Three (3) upper division hours from the Writing subcategory 
  • Three (3) upper division hours from the Theory subcategory
  • Twelve (12) elective hours (at least 3 must be upper division)
  • Three (3) hours of the Junior Research Seminar
  • In addition, six (6) of the hours above must fall into the Early Literature Course subcategory

  • Three (3) hours in Rhetoric and Culture
  • Three (3) hours in Design and Editing
  • Three (3) hours in Internship
  • Three (3) hours in Writing Seminar
  • In addition, three (3) hours from above must be Digital Intensive Courses
  • Six (6) elective hours must be in Design and Editing, Rhetoric and Culture or Creative Writing
  • Six (6) upper division electives in English (not listed above)
  • Six (6) electives in any English or Creative Writing subcategory

Minor in Creative Writing

The minor in creative writing requires 18 semester hours in writing or English (exclusive of ENGL 10803 and 20803). Of these, 12 hours must be in upper-division courses.

Students who major in English or writing may count no more than six hours of creative writing towards their major.

  • ENGL/ WRIT 10203 or 20103
  • Nine (9) hours of upper division creative writing workshops, with one at the 40000 level or higher

Creative Writing Minor Advising Form

Minor in English 

To earn a minor in English, students must complete 18 semester hours in English (exclusive of ENGL 10803 and ENGL 20803). Of these, 12 hours must be in upper-division courses. These distribution requirements apply:

  • Three (3) hours from the American Literature subcategory
  • Three (3) hours from the British Literature subcategory
  • Three (3) hours from the Writing subcategory

Nine (9) electives hours from CRWT, ENGL or WRIT courses

Minor in Writing

The minor in writing requires 18 semester hours in writing or English (exclusive of ENGL 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, 12 hours must be in upper-division courses.

To earn a minor in writing, students must also complete at least three of the 18 hours in digital intensive courses (see course subcategories list). Most of these courses can be used to satisfy one of the distribution requirements listed below. These distribution requirements apply (see course subcategories list):

  • Three (3) hours selected from the Creative Writing subcategory
  • Three (3) hours selected from the Rhetoric and Culture subcategory
  • Three (3) hours selected from the Design and Editing subcategory
  • Nine (9) hours of electives from the subcategories above, or any upper division ENGL or WRIT course
