Career Preparation

A Religion major or minor provides excellent preparation for a range of careers including, but by no means limited to ministry and traditional religious leadership. Religion majors deploy their skills in fields such as:

  • Business (better conduct business globally and in an increasingly diverse US)
  • Medicine and Nursing (better serve diverse patient populations, work with diverse medical teams, and deal sensitively with end-of-life issues)
  • Law (explore ethics, justice, and the interpretation of texts)
  • Mental Health (better address questions of purpose, happiness, suffering, and motivation)
  • Education (better serve diverse student populations and teach about global issues)
  • Government (international relations, public policy, and intelligence)
  • Liberal Arts (better understand humanity’s core values and beliefs, the roots of human conflict and change, and the meaning of great works of art and literature)

In our classrooms, students hone numerous skills valued by employers including:

  • Cultural literacy and global awareness for an increasingly globalized world and workplace. As recent PEW study observed, the world is becoming more religious not less.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills through the interpretation of complex texts in light of their historical contexts
  • Ethical reasoning in complex and challenging situations
  • Empathy and the ability to engage respectfully with people of varied backgrounds
  • The ability to conduct original research, evaluate sources, and articulate ideas clearly in both written and spoken formats.

Our grads have gone on to some of the most prestigious graduate schools in the world, from Harvard and Yale to the University of Chicago and Duke.

And our majors have gone on to succeed as doctors, lawyers, professors, editors, policemen, ministers, environmental activists and much more. Here are a few examples:

  • Chaplain, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital
  • Marriage and family therapist, Colorado West Regional Mental Health Centers
  • Director of youth ministries, First Christian Church of North Hollywood
  • Director, Village Help for South Sudan
