English Courses

 

Due to revisions of the major, the date that you declared your English major will determine which degree requirements you follow.

If you declared your major after August 19, 2014

To earn a BA with a major in English, students must complete 33 hours in English or writing (exclusive of ENGL 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, at least 24 hours must be in upper-division ENGL or WRIT courses (30000 level and above). No more than nine hours of lower-division credit may be applied to the major.

General Requirements

ENGL 30970 and 50970, courses in special topics, which change from semester to semester, usually satisfy one or more of the requirements for majors. Consult your adviser for information on these courses.

Specific Requirements

To earn a major, students must complete at least six of the 33 hours in early literature and culture courses (see course subcategories list). Most of these courses can be used to satisfy one of the distribution requirements listed below in categories A, B, C and E.

In addition, all majors in English are required to complete at least three of the 33 hours in a junior-level research seminar after they have attained junior standing and completed at least one 30000-level ENGL class. This seminar is taken as part of the required upper-division coursework and can be used to satisfy one of the distribution requirements listed below in categories A, B, C and E.

Other than courses for the early literature and culture category, courses may not count more than once among categories A, B, C, D and E.

Twelve elective hours of any courses offered by the Department of English; of these, at least three hours must be at the upper division.

If you declared your major before August 18, 2014

To earn a major in English, students must complete 31 hours in English (exclusive of 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, at least 25 hours must be in upper-division English courses (30000 level and above). No more than six hours of lower-division credit may be applied to the major.

General Requirements

All majors in English are required to take ENGL 40831 (Senior Seminar) after they have attained senior standing and completed 21 hours in English courses (exclusive of 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833).

ENGL 30973 and 50970, courses in special topics which change from semester to semester, usually satisfy one or more of the requirements for majors. For more information about these courses for the upcoming semester, see the course catalog.
