Are you a heritage language learner?

  • Were you raised in a home where a language other than English was spoken?
  • Do you have a personal, family, or community connection to another language than English, but you received the majority of your formal education in English?
  • Do you feel you have little experience using the language spoken at home in formal settings?
  • Do you speak or merely understand the non-English language spoken at home and are you to some degree bilingual in that language and in English?

If your answer to any of these questions is YES, you are a heritage language learner!

Designed for students who have some communicative ability in Spanish, normally acquired in the home, who want to improve their reading and writing abilities while developing a critical understanding of Latin American, Latino, and or Spanish histories and cultures. Course components include orthography and vocabulary activilies, grammar review and praclice, assigned readings in a variely of genres, critical cultural analysis, in-class discussions, written essays, and the viewing of films.

In the face of multiple climatic, social, and global emergencies, the future has become one of the most contested sites of political and artistic concern. What are the futures of Latin America? ls it the end or are there other possibilities? Can Humanities and artistic expression mitigate the destruction, or most optimistically save the world? Taught from an interdisciplinary perspective, the class examines artists' responses to major topios of our age, including violence, climate change, animal extinction, and borders. The Latin American futures is a big question course so will engage with multiple approaches of works of fiction, nonfiction, and film. Our exploration will also include topics of technology. care, kindship, solidarity, and reciprocity.

Prerequisites: At least one 40000- level literature course in Spanish
