Majors & Minors
Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Philosophy
The BA with a major in philosophy requires 24 semester hours in philosophy, which includes:
- Six or more semester hours in historical studies
- Three or more semester hours in logical studies
- Six or more semester hours in topical studies
- 12 or more of the 24 semester hours should be at the 40000-level.
The BA with a major in philosophy also requires a minor (or major) in another program at TCU and the completion of AddRan College of Liberal Arts’ foreign language requirement.
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Philosophy
The BS with a major in philosophy requires 30 semester hours in philosophy, which includes:
- Six or more semester hours in historical studies
- Three or more semester hours in logical studies
- 12 or more semester hours in topical studies
- 21 or more of the 30 semester hours should be at the 30000-level or higher. 12 or more of the 30 semester hours should be at the 40000-level.
The BS with a major in philosophy also requires a minor (or major) in economics, political science (with POSC 20093 — Scope and Methods of Political Science), or a program in the College of Science and Engineering. (There is room, in principle, for other minors to count, but permission must be given by the chair of the Department of Philosophy.)
The BS with a major in philosophy does not require the completion of AddRan College’s foreign language requirement.
Minor in Philosophy
The minor in philosophy requires 18 semester hours in philosophy, which includes:
- Three or more semester hours in historical studies
- Three or more semester hours in logical studies
- Three or more semester hours in topical studies at the 40000-level
- 9 or more of the 18 semester hours should be at the 30000-level or higher.
