Majors & Minors

Bachelor of Arts in Geography

The BA with a major in Geography requires 30 semester hours from among the following:

Degree Requirements

  • 10003: World Regional Geography
  • 20013: Human Geography
  • GEOL 10113: Understanding Earth
  • 30313: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

A minimum of 6 hours of courses with the regional designation (GEOG 305xx), including but not limited to:

  • 30503: Topics in Regional Geography
  • 30513: Geography of the United States
  • 30523: Geography of Latin America
  • 30533: Geography of Western Europe

A minimum of 6 hours of courses with the systematic designation (GEOG 307xx), including but not limited to:

  • 30703: Topics in Systematic Geography
  • 30713: Urban Geography
  • 30723: Cultural Geography
  • 30733: Geography of Religion
  • 30743: Applied Geography

Six hours of electives will consist of any two upper-division Geography courses.

 

Bachelor of Science in Geography

The BS with a major in geography requires 42 semester hours plus associated requirements of six hours.

Degree Requirements

Pick one (1) of the following:

  • COSC 10403: Introduction to Programming
  • GEOG 30323: Data Analysis and Visualization

Pick one (1) of the following:

  • MATH 10043: Elementary Statistics
  • INSC 20153: Statistical Analysis

The following twelve (12) hours of required introductory courses:

  • 10003: World Regional Geography
  • 20013: Human Geography
  • GEOL 10113: Understanding the Earth
  • 30313: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

A minimum of three (3) hours of the following GIS courses:

  • 40313: Advanced Geographic Information Systems
  • 40323: Urban and Business Applications of Geographic Information Systems

A minimum of twelve hours of other upper-division geography courses, including but not limited to:

  • 30503: Topics in Regional Geography
  • 30513: Geography of the United States
  • 30523: Geography of Latin America
  • 30533: Geography of Western Europe
  • 30703: Topics in Systematic Geography
  • 30723: Cultural Geography
  • 30733: Geography of Religion 
  • 30753: Population Geography
  • 30763: Economic Geography 

A minimum of nine hours of electives selected from the two following groups. Students must take at least one course from Group A and Group B. Some of these courses have prerequisites that are not part of the Geography BS.

Group B - Earth and Environmental Sciences

  • GEOL 30363: Introduction to Geospatial Technology
  • GEOL 40393: Soils in the Environment
  • GEOL 40493: Geomorphology
  • GEOL 50493: Physical Hydrology
  • GEOL 50863: Spatial Analysis
  • ENSC 50763: Groundwater Hydrology
  • ENSC 40503: Environmental Methods and Statistics
  • BIOL 30403: Ecology and the Environment
  • BIOL 40313: Biogeography 

6 hours selected from any of the upper-division courses listed in the BS degree plan, including but not limited to all upper-division geography courses.

 

Minor in Geography

The minor in geography requires 18 semester hours, including:

  • 10003: World Regional Geography
  • 20013: Human Geography
  • 9 hours of upper division geography courses

Three (3) semester hours from:

  • GEOL 10113: Understanding the Earth
  • GEOL 30113: Weather and Climate
  • GEOL 40493: Geomorphology
