"When I was working through the law school application process, my English background helped me craft the best application materials possible while also offering me a distinct viewpoint from my fellow applicants. In law school, I have found that the attention to detail and analytical strengths established through my English major allowed me to have a strong first year and be positioned for success as I move through the remainder of my legal education.”

English and Writing and Rhetoric majors pursue successful careers in communications, law, business, publishing, web design, editing, teaching, technical writing, public relations, management, advertising, medicine and nonprofit work. Our programs prepare students for any career that requires excellent written and oral communication skills, rhetorical sophistication and mastery in the critical analysis of information.

Studies have shown that a liberal arts degree not only trains students for their first job, but also gives them the skills and flexibility to get promoted, to move within a company or to embrace the new opportunities that our evolving economy creates.

Our students have excelled in earning admission to graduate programs in literature, writing and publishing; law schools; divinity schools; and medical schools. They have also earned prestigious post-graduate scholarships such as Fulbright awards.
