Sociology

As a sociology major you’ll have opportunities to explore fundamental aspects of human social and cultural life—families, economies, food, language, medicine & health, gender, sexualities, media & technology, race, ethnic relations, aging, education, religion, work, human-animal relationships, environment, globalization, human and societal evolution, and the vital social and cultural forces that produce social change, conflict, and inequality and much more.

The BA with a major in sociology requires 27 semester hours in sociology with a total of 124 hours. You must request a degree plan when reaching 60 credits hours within the AddRan College of Liberal Arts.

Course requirements include the following:

  • Nine hours of foundational courses
  • Three hours of associated requirement in elementary statistics
  • 42 hours of 30000 level or higher courses
  • 58 hours completed at TCU

The BS with a major in sociology requires 33 semester hours in sociology and a total of 124 hours. You must request a degree plan when reaching 60 credits hours within the college.

No more than six hours of lower-division sociology credit may be applied to the major. A minor is required; any minor approved for the BS degree is acceptable.

Course requirements include the following:

  • 12 hours of general requirement courses
  • 12 hours of area requirement courses from intersections, application/experience and cultural studies
  • Nine hours of sociology electives
  • 42 hours of 30000 level or higher courses
  • 58 hours completed at TCU

A minor requires SOCI 20213 — Introductory Sociology and 15 additional sociology hours. Any sociology course, including Contemporary Topics, can apply toward the minor. A minor in sociology is an excellent option that can fit with any major.

Sociology teacher certification requires 24 semester hours in sociology, including nine hours in SOCI 20213, SOCI 30373 and SOCI 30833.

The department of sociology and anthropology approves the awarding of three semester hours of credit for a score of 55 on the CLEP Subject Exam in Introductory Sociology, equivalent to SOIC 20213.

Sociology majors who plan to pursue departmental honors must be members of the Honors College and should enroll in SOCI 30003 during their junior year and SOCI 40003 during the fall semester of their senior year.
