This Spring, Dr. Samuel Ross received the 2019 BRAIS-De Gruyter Prize for his book manuscript, The Biblical Turn in the Qur’an Commentary Tradition. The manuscript traces the thousand-year history of Muslim scholarly engagement with the biblical text in the genre of tafsir (Qur’an commentary). The prize is administered by the British Association for Islamic Studies (BRAIS) in collaboration with the German academic publisher, De Gruyter. For more see: http://www.brais.ac.uk/prize.
This year two winners were selected. Dr. Ross shares the prize with Dr. Sohail Hanif, who recently completed his D. Phil. at Oxford University with a thesis on the famous early Muslim legal theorist, ‘Alī ibn Abī Bakr al-Marghīnānī.
Dr. Ross traveled to England to attend the 2019 BRAIS conference, receive the prize, and deliver a short talk summarizing his manuscript.
