Provost Dahlberg announced that Dr. Claire Sanders has accepted an appointment to serve as the Provost’s Faculty Fellow and the inaugural Academic Affairs DEI Advocate, from June 1, 2019, through May 31, 2020. During the summer, Dr. Sanders will spend 50 percent of her time leading DEI strategies within Academic Affairs. During the academic year, she will allocate 60 percent of her time as such, with the remaining time allocated to a reduced set of responsibilities within the Department of History as the senior instructor and co-director of African American and Africana Studies.

One of Dr. Sanders’ primary goals is to enable the provost’s office to support the implementation of DEI as an essential competency within the TCU core curriculum, as recommended by TCU faculty and students. Additionally, Dr. Sanders will aid Academic Affairs in prioritizing, implementing and monitoring diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and outcomes in alignment with the Vision in Action: Lead On strategic plan.

Dr. Sanders earned an undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College, and a Juris doctor, master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Since joining TCU in 1998, she has taught a range of history courses, including Modern European history and 20th-century European history, as well as an Honors Colloquia, and, working with the TCU Center for Career and Professional Development, has developed a course that helps liberal arts students prepare to enter the job market. She currently serves on the Humanities, Mission, Vision and Values Committee to approve courses for the TCU Core Curriculum, the School of Interdisciplinary Studies Curriculum Committee, and is a past co-chair of the Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies Curriculum Committee.

This position requires the expertise to cultivate DEI content, along with academic leadership capability and strategic thinking. Dr. Sanders’s education, talents and experiences bring these attributes to bear. Congratulations to Dr. Sanders!
