Minors

Minor in Creative Writing

The minor in creative writing requires 18 semester hours in writing or English (exclusive of ENGL 10803 and 20803). Of these, 12 hours must be in upper-division courses.

Students who major in English or writing may count no more than six hours of creative writing towards their major.

  • ENGL/WRIT 10203 or 20103;
  • Nine hours of upper-division creative writing workshops with one at the 40000-level or higher; (choose from among upper-division courses in the Course Subcategories List)
  • Six hours of ENGL or WRIT electives.

Due to revisions in the English minor, the date that you declared your minor will determine which course requirements you follow.

For those who declared after August 18, 2014

To earn a minor in English, students must complete 18 semester hours in English (exclusive of ENGL 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, 12 hours must be in upper-division courses. These distribution requirements apply (see course subcategories list):

  • Three hours from the American literature subcategory;
  • Three hours from the British literature subcategory;
  • Three hours from the writing subcategory; Nine elective hours of any ENGL or WRIT courses offered by the Department of English.

For those who declared before August 18, 2014

English minors must complete 18 semester hours in English (exclusive of 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, nine hours must be in upper-division (30000/40000 level) courses. These distribution requirements apply (see course subcategories list):

A. Three hours of American literature, selected from this list: ENGL 20503, 20523, 20533, 20543, 20583, 30133, 30143, 30163, 30503, 30513, 30533, 30553, 30563, 30573, 30583, 30593, 30693, 30703, 30713, 40523, 40533, 40543, 40553, 40563, 40573, 40583, 40593, 40683, and 40723

For those who declared after August 18, 2014

The minor in writing requires 18 semester hours in writing or English (exclusive of ENGL 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, 12 hours must be in upper-division courses.

To earn a minor in writing, students must also complete at least three of the 18 hours in digital intensive courses (see course subcategories list). Most of these courses can be used to satisfy one of the distribution requirements listed below in categories A, B, C and D. These distribution requirements apply (see course subcategories list):

A. Three hours selected from the creative writing subcategory
B. Three hours selected from the rhetoric and culture subcategory
C. Three hours selected from the design and editing subcategory
D. Nine hours of electives from any courses listed in sections A through C above, or any upper-division WRIT or ENGL courses offered by the Department of English

If you declared between January 2011 and August 18, 2014

To earn a minor, students must complete 18 semester hours in English (excluding 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, nine hours must be in upper-division courses. These distribution requirements apply (see course subcategories list):

  • Three hours of creative writing, selected from this list: ENGL 10203, 20103, 30233, 30343, 30353, 30363, 30373, 40133, 40203, 40213, 40223 and 50233;
  • Three hours of rhetoric and culture, selected from this list: ENGL 20313, 20333, 30203, 30213, 30243, 30253, 30273, 30283, 30663, 30803, 40253, 40333, 50243 and 50253;
  • Three hours of design and editing, selected from this list: ENGL 20303, 30223, 30263, 30813, 40163, 40233, 40243, 40263 and 40283;
  • Nine hours of electives from any courses listed in sections A through C above, or any upper-division courses offered by the Department of English.

If you declared before January 2011

To earn a minor, students must complete 18 semester hours in English (excluding 10803, 10833, 20803 and 20833). Of these, nine hours must be in upper-division courses. These distribution requirements apply (see course subcategories list):

  • Three hours of craft, selected from this list: ENGL 10203, 20103, 30233, 30343, 30353, 30363, 30373, 40133, 40203, 40213, 40223 and 50233;
  • Three hours of rhetoric and culture, selected from this list: ENGL 20313, 20333, 30203, 30243, 30253, 30273, 30283, 30663, 40253, 40333;
  • Three hours of practical arts, selected from this list: ENGL 20303, 30213, 30223, 30813, 40163, 40233, 40243 and 40283;
  • Nine hours of electives from any courses listed in sections A through C (above) or any upper-division courses offered by the Department of English.
